Amazon QuickSight January 2019 Update

Released on January 11th, 2019

New Features

Launching Pivot Table Enhancements, Cross-Schema Joins and More

Amazon QuickSight launches support for additional functionality on pivot table charts. Pivot tables now have an updated look and feel with consistent shading, support copy and pasting cell values, provide formatting options to auto fit to screen size to reduce empty spaces and more. Most importantly, you can add totals and sub-totals on rows and columns, expand/collapse all rows/columns with a single click. Additionally, with an increase in row/column field limits, authors can now add up to 20 values in each of the row and column field wells. With pagination enabled, users can now scroll down and across infinitely. For more information on new pivot table enhancements, see here.

Amazon QuickSight also supports cross-schema and self-joins through the UI during data preparation. With cross-schema joins, data curators can create datasets in QuickSight from one or more tables across different schemas within the same cluster. This allows them the flexibility to have tables within different schemas yet join them from within QuickSight. With self-join capabilities, data curators can now use a data table more than once within a join with itself or other tables. For more information on enhanced join capabilities, see here.

In addition to advanced table calculations launched earlier, Amazon QuickSight now supports Lead and Lag functions with any arbitrary value of N >=1. You can also use conditional aggregation functions to derive aggregations such as sum, average, count based on a condition. These functions include sumif, avgif, and more. See here to learn more.

Additionally, you can now easily access recently viewed analyses and dashboards and also sort by name and last updated. QuickSight also supports filtering bulk values through custom filter lists so you can provide a list of up to 10K values at once without having to choose values one at a time from the filter list.

These launches are in both Standard and Enterprise Editions in all QuickSight regions - US East (N. Virginia and Ohio), US West (Oregon), EU (Ireland), and Asia Pacific (Singapore, Sydney, and Tokyo).
