Act-On Marketing Automation - New Forms Composer

One of Act-On’s latest releases to their Marketing Automation platform is a completely overhauled Forms Composer, bringing it up-to-speed with their block-based Landing Page and Email Composers.

To create a form using the new composer in Act-On, go to Content Forms, click on the blue + button and then the button below it.

Sections and Blocks Structure

Sections contain form content and are used for customizing its layout as well. Note that all Content Blocks need to be added inside a Section.

To add a new section from your form, go to the Design tab and drag and drop the New Section block onto your form.

Blocks customize your form with content per your needs. Act-On’s new Form Composer blocks supports the following content:

  • Rich text
  • Image
  • Text
  • Hidden Field
  • Paragraph
  • Combo Box
    • Drop-Down List
    • Radio Buttons
    • Checkboxes
  • Captcha
  • Date
  • Submit Button
  • Saved Block

Saving Form Content

Sections, as well as blocks, can be saved as Form Content Fragments in the new composer. To save a form section, hover over it with the cursor and click the Gear icon to its right. Then, from the Settings menu, click on the Floppy Disk button to save it with the name and in the folder of your choosing.

To access a content block’s Settings menu and save, click directly on it and click the Floppy Disk button.

To use saved Sections, click and drag the Saved Section button (next to the New Section button) onto your form, and choose the section you would like. Adding a saved content Blocks works in the same way: click and drag the Saved Block button and select which saved block you want to use.

Using saved Sections and Blocks is a great time-saver if your forms usually contain repeating fields (such as First Name, Last Name, Email, Company, etc.).

Show/Hide Content Based On Conditional Rules

This new functionality allows users to show or hide fields and question based on visitor interaction. For instance, the question ‘Are you using CRM?’ which users can answer with Yes or No from a drop-down.

  • If the answer is ‘Yes’, we want to display the next question, ‘Which CRM are you using?’.
  • If users answer ‘No’, there would be no point in displaying the next question so that it can be hidden.

To do so, from the Settings bar on the right of the composer, click the Form Conditions button. Then, set up a rule that displays the ‘What CRM are you using?’ question only if ‘Are you using CRM?’ has a value of ‘No’.


Currently, the new Act-On forms can be published in two ways:

  • On an Act-On landing page: open the landing page you’d like use, then add a form block and select the form. Of note is the fact that new Act-On forms adapt to the container’s size, so you won’t have to edit form height until it fits the landing page. New forms also automatically adapt to the mobile version of the landing page.
  • On a third-party page: In the Forms Composer, go to the Publish tab. Click on the Embed Code button on the right side of the page, and copy the code embed code onto your page. The ‘No CSS’ option excludes all CSS from the form wherever this code will be used.

The new Forms Composer from Act-On is in Beta. It is completely functional for landing page forms, but as of now, Act-On users can still use the classic composer, and webinar programs can only be created using the classic version.
